Nestled in the lush highlands of Ethiopia’s Sidama zone, in the village of Bombe, lies the Ayla washing station—a testament to the passion and dedication of Testi Coffee, a family-owned company founded by Mr. Faysel A. Yonis. Named after one of Mr. Faysel’s beloved nieces, Ayla is one of 26 washing stations managed by Testi Coffee, each reflecting a deep commitment to quality and sustainability.
Perched at an elevation of 1,950 meters above sea level, Ayla is surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of the Bensa woreda. Here, coffee thrives in harmony with nature, nourished by the pristine waters of the nearby Bonora river. The station specializes in both washed and natural processed coffees, crafting exceptional lots that showcase the unique terroir of the region.
The coffee you’re enjoying comes from the hard work of approximately 725 smallholder farmers, each tending to tiny plots of land—often less than two hectares in size. These families farm organically, growing coffee alongside food crops like corn, grain, and bananas, under the shade of native Birbira, Wanza, and Acacia trees. Coffee is their lifeblood, a vital cash crop that supports their livelihoods and communities.
The high-altitude farms in this region, ranging from 1,950 to 2,150 meters above sea level, benefit from cool temperatures and ideal growing conditions. This allows the coffee cherries to ripen slowly, developing denser beans and a cup profile that is both sweet and complex—a true reflection of the Sidama terroir.
At Ayla, every detail matters. Testi Coffee takes pride in processing each kebele’s (village’s) cherry delivery as a distinct lot, ensuring exceptional traceability and quality. This particular lot hails from the kebele of Bombe, offering you a taste of the care and craftsmanship that goes into every step of the journey—from farm to cup.
When you enjoy this coffee, you’re not just savoring a remarkable brew; you’re supporting the families and communities who make it possible. Thank you for being part of their story.
