Nestled in the lush hills of La Estrella, Acevedo, in Colombia’s famed Huila region, Finca El Recreo is the lifelong work of third-generation coffee producer Alirio Rodriguez. At 1,550 meters above sea level, his 5-hectare farm thrives in fertile volcanic soils nourished by the Magdalena River and the surrounding Andean massif. This area’s rich biodiversity and stable microclimate create the ideal environment for cultivating exceptional specialty coffee.
After more than 30 years of farming, Alirio turned to specialty production in 2018, focusing on quality, sustainability, and innovation. His chosen variety, Caturron, is a rare and locally celebrated variety from Acevedo—known for its large cherries, resistance to leaf rust, and distinctive sweetness. Alirio handpicks only the ripest red cherries, which are then dried naturally on raised beds, allowing the fruit’s sugars to infuse the beans with complexity and depth. The cherries are turned frequently to ensure even drying, resulting in a clean, consistent cup that reflects both careful craftsmanship and deep respect for the land.
When brewed, El Recreo unfolds with bright mandarin acidity, soft honeyed sweetness, and a juicy red-berry finish. Its elegant balance and festive fruit character make it the perfect cup to share this Christmas—celebrating both the warmth of the season and the dedication of Colombian farmers like Alirio Rodriguez.
