High in Ethiopia’s Sidama region, at altitudes ranging from 2,300 to 2,400 metres above sea level, lies the Shantawene estate, home to the Dukamo family and some of the most vibrant coffees in the region. Grown in clay-rich soils beneath native trees over 200 years old, these coffees thrive under ideal conditions, resulting in a complex and expressive profile.

This particular lot is named Muliphein, one of the stars in the Dukamo family’s universe of coffees. Each of their lots is given a star’s name, with subtle differences in flavour, aroma and process—reflecting the diversity of the farms and the passion of the producers behind them.

Here, ripe cherries are dried slowly outdoors using a traditional natural process, preserving the full intensity of flavour. The result is a juicy, fruit-forward cup with notes of peach, white grape, and orange blossom.

This coffee is produced by the Dukamo family, who began their journey over 15 years ago in the Bensa-Sidama region. What started with two brothers helping their parents on the farm has grown into a family-run enterprise spanning three farms, 42 washing stations, and over 2,500 farmers who are supported with sustainable, traceable coffee-growing practices.

The Shantawene estate and Daye Bensa dry mill—where this lot was processed—are located just 10km from the town of Daye. Local workers from surrounding communities are employed across the farms and facilities, all overseen by members of the Dukamo family, many of whom have grown up with a shared love of coffee and are now part of the next generation shaping its future.

With an SCA score of 88, Muliphein offers a truly stellar expression of high-altitude Ethiopian coffee—fruity, floral, and full of life.
