Smallholders farm plots of fewer than a hectare each, their gardens shaded and enriched by fertile soils shaped by centuries of volcanic activity. At this altitude, cool temperatures slow the development of the cherry, building the density and sweetness that define Kenyan coffee at its finest.

Since the Karimikui Factory was founded in 1953, one of the earliest established in the region, the over 2,500 producers delivering to it have had both a structure and a shared purpose. United under the Rung'eto Farmers Cooperative Society, members gain fair access to markets, collective processing infrastructure, and the kind of ongoing support that reaches beyond the farm gate. The premiums earned flow back into the community, and the craft passes naturally to the next generation, grown up among the trees.

The varieties here carry their own deep roots. SL28 and SL34, developed by Scott Agricultural Laboratories in the 1930s and 40s, became the backbone of Kenyan coffee for good reason: their deep root systems draw water from well below the surface, thriving without irrigation and standing resilient through dry seasons. Batian and Ruiru 11 bring disease resistance and reliable yields alongside them, a practical balance of heritage and adaptability, farmed with care and minimal environmental impact.

At harvest, each smallholder selectively handpicks only ripe cherry from their own plot and delivers it to the factory, where a Cherry Clerk sorts and floats each delivery at intake, accepting only the densest, most uniform fruit. Cherries are pulped and fermented for 12 to 24 hours before being thoroughly washed in clean water. The parchment is then soaked for a further 24 hours, a step that brings clarity and longevity to the green coffee, before being laid on raised drying beds for up to three weeks. Workers rake and shade the parchment throughout, protecting a slow and even drying that allows the coffee's full character to develop before milling.

In the cup, the result is bright and expressive. Expect vibrant fruit aromatics with vivid raspberry and blood orange acidity, lifted by the syrupy sweetness that only a fully washed coffee at this altitude delivers. Brewed as a filter, it opens with juicy clarity and carries through a lingering golden kiwi sweetness. A coffee shaped as much by the land as by the community that has tended it for generations.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0635/9174/3706/files/Kenya_karimikui_2372983c-03c3-46af-8343-dbd4d8dc973e.png?v=1782474457
