This project started around 5 years ago. The idea that we could sustainably ship coffee while feeling closer to the communities we buy coffee from was such a wonderful prospect. The coffee industry is a worldwide trade and we can often be disconnected from aspects of the journey from farm to shop.
The collab with New Dawn Traders gave us the opportunity to be a part of the journey from Colombia to Ireland, with junior roaster Grace, joining the team on the final 7 day leg aboard the Grayhound vessel from Falmouth in Cornwall to Dublin.
Cofinet, who supplied us with this coffee have a wonderful connection to a direct trade, as founders Carlos and Felipe Arcilla grew up farming. When Carlos finished his studies in the UK and moved to Australia he saw a demand for direct coffee in Australia. That's when he called his brother and they started Cofinet.
Their father, Jairo Arcilla is the producer of the decaf we received off the ship, while this amazing Castillo is produced by their mother, Luz Helena, who learned the coffee trade after marrying Jairo. Carlos says Luz Helena now knows more than they whole family about coffee growing and agronomy.
This Castillo from Maracay is a wonderful complex espresso, with a lovely caramel-like sweet taste. Not only will it be exciting for black coffee drinkers but also for those who like a milky coffee - a true crowd pleaser.
